Road conditions across Metro Detroit are unlikely to improve until the weekend, according to weather forecasts.

Overnight snowfall caused 86 traffic accidents in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties between Wednesday and Thursday, December 12, as reported by WWJ News. Hazardous conditions, including snow squalls, black ice, and whiteouts, are expected to persist until temperatures rise into the mid-40s later this weekend.

Despite salt trucks treating many roads, the cold temperatures are preventing ice from melting. Thursday’s high is forecasted to be just 22 degrees, accompanied by strong wind gusts of 30-40 mph.

Temperatures are expected to reach 50 degrees by Monday, December 16, but until then, Michigan State Police are advising drivers to exercise caution, emphasizing, “Slow down! Weather doesn’t cause crashes, drivers do!”

“Remember, you must stay 200 feet behind a snow plow and stop 20 feet behind if stopped at an intersection. Your paint and the snow plow drivers will thank you. You must move over a lane AND slow down 10 miles per hour below the posted speed limit!” MSP continued.
