Nearly eight years after its acquisition by Knight-Swift Transportation, Abilene Motor Express is losing its standalone status and will be folded into the company’s Swift Transportation segment.

In internal communications obtained by FreightWaves, Larry Johnson, president of Abilene Motor Express, said the move is part of a broader initiative to improve efficiency and streamline operations across the organization.

“This alignment helps us work more cohesively, move faster and better serve our drivers and customers,” Johnson said.

Abilene, an over-the-road carrier, will continue operating under its own name through January 27. After that date, its drivers will officially transition to Swift. Johnson said drivers will receive clear guidance and ongoing support throughout the process.

Based in Richmond, Virginia, Abilene Motor Express operates nearly 500 tractors, according to the company’s LinkedIn page.

Johnson underscored the finality of the move in his message, thanking Abilene employees for their years of service and adding that the company looks forward to “welcoming those joining the Swift family.” Customers have also been notified of the transition.

Knight-Swift CEO Adam Miller echoed those sentiments in a separate internal communication, calling the move part of the company’s long-term strategy.

“This transition reflects our commitment to operating efficiency while positioning our business for long-term success,” Miller said. “We are building on a strong foundation, creating greater alignment across our Knight-Swift network, and ensuring continued opportunities and reliable service for our drivers and our customers.”

Knight-Swift Transportation (NYSE: KNX) has not issued a formal public statement regarding the change. An email and phone call from FreightWaves seeking comment were not returned by publication time.

Abilene is one of several brands operating under the Knight-Swift umbrella. In addition to its flagship Knight and Swift brands, the company’s most recent 10-K filing lists U.S. Xpress, ACT, MME, Barr-Nunn, and LTL carrier DHE among its operating units.
