I-70 commercial vehicle inspection leads to $6.3M cocaine seizure in Ohio

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers seized 154 pounds of cocaine valued at approximately $6.3 million during a commercial vehicle inspection on Interstate 70 near London, Ohio, the agency said.

The seizure occurred Jan. 23 at approximately 1:55 p.m., when troopers stopped a semi-trailer as part of routine commercial vehicle enforcement. During the inspection, troopers observed criminal indicators and deployed a patrol drug-sniffing canine. The canine alerted to the vehicle, providing probable cause for a search.

A subsequent search uncovered 154 pounds of cocaine concealed inside cabinets within the truck, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The investigation remains ongoing.

The case underscores the role of commercial vehicle inspections in interdicting illicit freight movements along major transportation corridors. Interstate 70 is a key east-west route for commercial freight traffic through Ohio and the broader Midwest.

In 2025, the Ohio State Highway Patrol seized 1,607 pounds of cocaine statewide, reflecting continued enforcement pressure on drug trafficking operations using public roadways.
